The Reimagined FIRST LEGO League
The next generation of FIRST LEGO League creates an evolved experience leveraging LEGO® Education Computer Science & AI kits, which consist of teacher support materials, bricks, hardware and code, designed for bringing computer science into the daily lives of students.
The experience is designed to make implementation easy and seamless in both classrooms and after-school environments. With hardware powered by LEGO Education Computer Science & AI, the program will meaningfully engage every type of learner, including those who may not have naturally seen themselves in robotics or STEM.
We’ve created a comprehensive FIRST LEGO League Future Edition Australian Guide to support schools, coaches, and community teams as we transition into this exciting new chapter. FIRST® LEGO® League Future Edition: Program Snapshot

Yearly budget is $2000 (approx). Initial year only, as robots parts can be used in consecutive years.
Gather your team
Each team requires at least 2 adult coaches and up to 8 students aged 8-16. Students can come from a school, a group of friends, a local club, or a homeschooling network. No prior robotics experience is needed – just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Find your home base
Your team will need a home base with internet access and enough space to build and test your robot. Many teams operate out of classrooms, libraries, or community centres, but it’s also possible to start from home.

Register your team
Coaches can register a team and every team must first create an account and register with FIRST® to obtain their official 6-digit International Team Number. Once registered, you’ll receive your official team number, have your official season challenge kit delivered, and be able to sign up for your first local competition!

Purchase robotics equipment
To participate, your team will also need a LEGO® Education Computer Science & AI kit which can be purchased from a LEGO distributor including MTA, Moore Education and CD Soft. You will also need a compatible device (laptop or tablet) to program and operate your robot.

Start the challenge journey
The new challenge is released globally on August 4, marking the start of your team’s season. From there, teams begin designing, building, and programming their robot to complete the mission models, while also researching a real-world problem to develop their Innovation Project. Throughout the season, coaches and mentors can further build their skills and confidence through a range of FIRST training modules and resources.

Join a competition
Wrap up your season by attending a local competition, where your team will present their Innovation Project, and compete against other teams with their robot. Winning teams will have the opportunity to advance to the National Championship in Sydney.

Founders Edition and Future Edition
FIRST LEGO League will enter a new, temporary chapter beginning August 2026, with two editions running in parallel through May 2028. This two-edition model will give teams and educators flexibility to transition at their own pace as the new experience becomes available in each region.
With the overall program changes, it’s important to note that the new FIRST LEGO League experience is not compatible with LEGO Education SPIKE™ technology or other legacy products.

Built-in wireless connectivity lets the hubs pair automatically — no cables to manage, so teams spend less time on setup and more time building and coding.
Game Models with Embedded Hardware
We have utilised this system of hardware, splitting its use between team robotic solutions and motorising game models – making them interactive and adding a new layer of strategy to the matches.
Semi-cooperative Matches on a Shared Game Field
Two teams share a single field and play semi-cooperatively, balancing their own goals with shared objectives for a richer, more strategic match.
Unique Player Roles with Guided Missions
Each team member takes on a distinct role with guided missions, so everyone contributes and learns a different part of the challenge.
Transition Plan: Founders Edition to Future Edition
FIRST LEGO League Future Edition will have its first and only season in 2026–2027. LEGO Education has decided not to renew its partnership with FIRST beyond the 2026–2027 season. From 2027–2028 onwards, LEGO® Education will launch and operate its own program using the Computer Science and AI Kits.

Costs & Registrations
To participate in the FIRST LEGO League Future Edition, teams must purchase Team Registration and an official FIRST LEGO League Future Edition Kit. Both are available through the FIRST Australia Dashboard. Teams will also need a LEGO® Education SPIKE™ Computer Science & AI, which can be purchased from an approved Australian LEGO reseller. Cost details are outlined below.
Team Registration
FIRST LEGO League Future Edition Team registration includes guided materials you need to engage participants and access to purchase other supporting materials.
$225 + GST /per season
Registration for one Future Edition team (up to 8 students)
Eligibility to compete at a Regional Qualifying Event
Official judging and scoring, including robot performance and research project presentations
